Lightning Creek's hidden gold was discovered in 1861. The creek was so cold that the prospector's brave enough to search for their fortunes in it's frigid waters claimed it felt like being hit by lightning. Despite the cold, the bountiful riches proved to be worth the dip.

Strange creatures in an untamed land, the 23 camels tasked to carry supplies to Barkerville faced unfamiliar terrain and unwelcoming hosts. Impressively hearty, they terrified horses and ate everything from hats to bars of soap. The camels were soon let loose to fend for themselves.

Barkerville attracted more than just miners, one of these industrious spirits was black pioneer William Allen Jones. After graduating from college in Ohio, this formerly enslaved adventurer emigrated to Barkerville where he became BC's first licensed dentist. Through his use of modern medicine and shrewd advertising, he became known as Painless Jones.
